Engaging in a weight loss program that promises a quick and easy solution to your excess flab might sound magical to you. However, learning more about fad diets and the impact they make on your health is important as these diets can offer negative results despite their promised benefits.
A fad diet is a type of diet which promises weight loss that is fast and easy. Though they may claim immediate weight loss, these diets are not scientifically proven by research. Many healthcare authorities have warned people about fad diets as they can have a significant negative impact to your health. Most fad diets restrict a certain food group and decrease the total energy intake that you consume daily. Though it’s a fact that you need to burn more calories than what you consume, to lose weight fad diets take this knowledge to extreme proportions.
For example, a fad diet may exclude carbohydrates entirely in an effort to lose weight. Carbohydrates are essential sources of energy that we need to consume daily. Without it, our body consumes the stored carbohydrates in the muscles and liver to the point that when stored carbohydrates are exhausted, the body begins to burn protein or muscle tissue for energy. This results in weight loss but it is only temporary. Once you eat carbohydrates again, your weight will shoot back up.
A weight loss regimen that happens at a surprisingly fast rate is alarming and dangerous. It doesn’t even guarantee that the weight you have lost will stay lost.
Malnutrition – The main consequence is ultimately malnutrition. As you cut down on certain food groups, you won’t be getting the vitamins and minerals that you need, leading to a weaker and more frail body.
Dehydration – In a fad diet, the weight you lose often is not fat – it is water stored inside your body. This can lead to dehydration as your body continues to burn calories without the optimal amount of water.
Bowel Problems – Rapid loss of weight can lead to diarrhea followed by constipation in the body’s attempt to compensate. Diarrhea adds to the risk of dehydration and in extreme cases can become life-threatening.
Exhaustion – Since fad diets often cut down on certain food groups, you won’t be getting the energy that you need, resulting in weakness and chronic exhaustion.
