Weakness/numbness on one side : Emergency Room

If it’s been going on for longer than 24 hours and is affecting your face, arm or leg on one side of your body, you could have a stroke. A stroke can cause weakness, numbness and/or dizziness in any part of your body. It could even cause speech problems. It’s important to see a doctor immediately if you experience symptoms like these.

Urgent care is better equipped and staffed than an emergency room, so it’s a safer option when you need non-emergency treatment. They are open more hours of the day, so if you’re injured during off-hours (like in a late-night accident), or in an area where there aren’t many emergency rooms (i.e., far from any major metropolitan area), urgent care can be a lifesaver. Urgent care is also cheaper than most ERs; you may only pay $100 or less for treatment for something that would have cost thousands at an ER.

While it’s always a good idea to consult your doctor, you probably don’t need emergency care if you experience weakness on one side of your body or trouble walking. Common causes of these problems include stroke and seizures, which require immediate medical attention. But if it’s caused by something less serious—such as dehydration or blood clots in your legs—you can address it with rest and fluids. If there is no improvement after six hours, consult a physician.

If your headache is accompanied by weakness or numbness on one side of your body, you might be suffering from a stroke, which is usually caused by a blood clot that has formed in one of your arteries. If you’re experiencing these symptoms and they don’t pass after an hour or two, go immediately to an emergency room. Don’t wait it out and think, It’s probably nothing. It could be life-threatening. To reduce your risk of having a stroke, eat a healthy diet high in fiber, avoid smoking and drinking excess alcohol, stay physically active and maintain a healthy weight. For example: getting regular exercise can help you lower blood pressure and lower cholesterol levels.
